Project 8: Written Assignment from Field Trip to Danforth Art Museum

Begin while at field trip to Danforth Art Museum on March 30
Due as part of Portfolio 2 on May 4

DETAILS ON FIELD TRIP:

On Wednesday, March 30, we will be going on a field trip to the Danforth Museum of Art, located at 123 Union Avenue in the center of Framingham, less than 2 miles from the Framingham State University campus.

The morning class will meet at the museum at 9 AM; the afternoon class will meet at the museum at 3 PM.

We will meet in the museum lobby, accessible through the front entrance facing Union Avenue; please do not come to our classroom in May Hall.

Bring a notebook, a pencil (the museum does not allow ballpoint pens or markers in their galleries), and this direction sheet (also available online at the class website).

We will be given a tour of the museum by a docent, which will take approximately 1 hour. Then you will spend 30 minutes taking the notes you need for this project.

The morning class can expect to be finished at approximately 10:30 AM; the afternoon class can expect to be finished at approximately 4:30 PM.

For directions to the museum, visit their website at DanforthMuseum.org; click on the “About” section. Parking is available in the museum’s lot or on the street.

If for any reason you miss this field trip, you will be marked as absent for the day AND you will be responsible for visiting the museum on your own time and completing the project as assigned.

DIRECTIONS FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT:

Select 2 (two) of the artworks on display in the museum, and answer the following questions about them. Answer all 10 questions separately for each artwork.

Each answer must be a carefully considered, carefully developed thought.

Each answer must consist of least 3 complete sentences; “Yes” or “Brown” are not sentences.

Each sentence must contribute to the idea you are putting forth; answers like “I’m just guessing here” or “This is just my opinion“ are not acceptable.

See additional handout for examples of “good” responses to this project.

Give the title of the artwork, the name of the artist who created it, and the date the artwork was created; then respond to the following questions:

1.          Describe the artwork in detail.

2.          Rename this work of art, and explain why you would give it this title.

3.          Describe the sounds you would hear in the background of this artwork.

4.         If there is a person visible in this artwork, what might that person say to you, and what makes you think this? If there is no person in this artwork, what might a person who “lived” here look like and what might they say to you?

5.          What are the main colors in this artwork, and why do you think the artist used these colors?

6.          What is the overall mood of this artwork, and what about it creates this impression?

7.          What do you think the artist wanted to communicate with this artwork?

8.          What do you think this work of art reveals about the artist's life, and what matters to him/her as a person?

9.          What would you ask the artist about this work, if you could meet with her/him in person?

10.          Why did you choose this work of art to write about? (“I liked it” or “It intrigued me” are not specific enough as answers.)
